Onyx is the anniversary gemstone for the 7th year of marriage and Black Onyx is the anniversary gemstone for the 10th year of marriage. The word onyx was used by ancient Romans for a wide variety of stones including Alabaster, Chalcedony and Onyx Marble. The word sardonyx is derived from the Greek, sard meaning reddish brown and onyx meaning veined gem. Roman soldiers wore Sardonyx talismans engraved with heroes believing that the stone would make the wearer brave and daring. During the Renaissance, Sardonyx was believed to bring eloquence upon the wearer and was regarded with great value by public speakers and orators. Onyx is very similar to Agate. Onyx usually has straight bands of brown, white or black while Agate often has curved lines of many colors. Onyx measures a respectable medium hardness of 6.5 to 7.0 on the Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness. Colors: Onyx is a gemstone with light and dark bands colored in black, brown, grey, red and white.
