ANTIQUED BRONZE is a dull and dark gold/brass/bronze color, specifically made to resemble antique bronze artifacts. ABOUT THE SYMBOLThe TOMOE (Mitsu tomoe, Futatsu tomoe, Tomoe-mon, Fire-wheel) symbol is ubiquitous on Buddhist and Shinto temples all over Japan. The name tomoe, meaning turning or circular, refers to the motion of the earth. The tomoe is related to the yin yang symbol, and has a similar meaning, representing the play of forces in the cosmos. Visually, the tomoe is made up of interlocked flames (or magatama) resembling tadpoles. The most common tomoe emblem has three flames (triple, or ‘mitsu’ tomoe), but one, two, or four are not uncommon. A mitsu-tomoe reflects the threefold division of Shinto cosmology, and is said to represent the earth, the heavens, and humankind. The mitsu-tomoe is often associated with the Shinto war deity Hachiman. The tomoe appears in many designs with various uses. When circumscribed in a circle, it often appears in a set of three, with this design known as the mitsudomoe. A SHURIKEN (Japanese: ‘hand-hidden blade’) is a Japanese handheld weapon used by samurai or ninja or in martial arts as a hidden dagger or metsubushi to distract or misdirect. Shuriken are also known as throwing stars, or ninja stars, although they were originally constructed in many different shapes. The major varieties of shuriken are the bo shuriken (stick shuriken) and the hira shuriken (flat shuriken) or shaken (wheel shuriken, also read as kurumaken). Shuriken functioned as supplementary weapons to the sword or to other weapons in a samurai’s arsenal, although they often had an important tactical effect in battle. The art of wielding the shuriken is known as shurikenjutsu and was taught as a part of the martial-arts curriculum of many schools.
